Dr. Betty Pace, a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, is a Francis J. Tedesco Distinguished Chair of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University. Dr. Pace's journey began with her MD degree and residency training in pediatrics at the Medical College of Wisconsin from 1977-1984, followed by a Pediatric Hematology/Oncology fellowship at the University of Colorado. In 2010, she joined the faculty at Augusta University, where she leads an NIH-funded basic/translational research laboratory. Her research is focused on developing novel drug treatments for sickle cell disease, a field where her impact is highly significant. Dr. Pace's commitment to training over 100 junior scientists and directing an NHLBI-funded training Program to Increase Diversity for Individuals Engaged in Health-Related Research has expanded the diversity of the US biomedical research workforce. Dr. Pace's dedication to diversity and training was recognized with the Leadership in Promoting Diversity award from the American Society of Hematology in 2017. She was further honored with the 2023 Woman in Science award from the American Medical Women’s Association for her research and training accomplishments.
