Gregory Kato has been a hematology clinician-scientist for more than 30 years. He is an Executive Director and Global Product Lead in the Hematology Therapeutic Area at CSL in King of Prussia, PA. He graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in 1985. He completed a residency in pediatrics at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles and a fellowship in pediatric hematology-oncology at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center. Dr. Kato worked for 13 years at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, 10 years at the National Institutes of Health and 6 years at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine where he was a tenured Professor of Medicine. He is best known for his clinical-translational research characterizing the contribution of intravascular hemolysis to the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease. He has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including a Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (1991), a Clinician Scientist Award from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1998), and an NHLBI Merit Award (2008) and Orloff Science Award (2012). He is co-editor of a 2021 textbook on Sickle Cell Disease and has authored more than 400 published works. He has been a grant application reviewer for NIH, FDA and numerous foundations. He has served as a manuscript reviewer for over 50 journals. He has been a past Scientific Chair of the FSDCR Symposium, and has served as organizing chair and moderator of many sessions.
