Thomas Coates, MD is the head of the Hematology Section in the Cancer and Blood Disease Instutue at the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Professor of Pediatrics and Pathology at USC Keck School of Medicine. His interests include sickle cell disease, thalassemia, neutrophil disorders, and iron overload in children and adults.
He led the Excellence in Hemoglobinopathies Research Award from NHLBI, entitled “Multimodal biophysical biomarkers of vascular disease in hemoglobinopathies” which addressed physiological responses to pain in sickle cell disease and chronic anemias.
Since 1999, Dr. Coates has helped develop MRI methodology to measure tissue iron in patients with iron overload, revolutionizing clinical management and validating iron biochemistry concepts in human. He is currently is currently involved in clinical and translational reserach related to iron overload, iron metabolism disorders and hemoglobinopathies.
