Dr. Nelly Kiriza is a physician and public health professional with a passion for advancing global health through clinical research. Holding both a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Tumaini University Makumira-KCMUCo and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Kiriza currently serves as a postdoctoral fellow at University of Pittsburgh, School of Medicine in the Division of Classical Hematology, where she manages and supports key research initiatives with a focus on hematological disorders.
At the forefront of the work is an international clinical study focused on sickle cell disease, a life-limiting genetic condition that disproportionately affects populations in sub-Saharan Africa and underserved communities worldwide. Dr. Kiriza plays a central role in the coordination of this study, which seeks to improve access to care, and long-term health outcomes for individuals living with sickle cell disease (SCD). The project includes collaboration with research partners from Lagos University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria, ensuring culturally responsive practices and sustainable impact.
With experience spanning both clinical practice and public health in sub-Saharan Africa and USA, Dr. Kiriza is skilled in research protocol development, ethical compliance, participant recruitment, data integrity and site monitoring. Her MPH training focused on Public Health Genetics, equipping her to navigate complex international research environments with cultural sensitivity and scientific rigor.
Dr. Kiriza's commitment to improving the lives of those affected by SCD reflects a broader dedication to health equity and translational research. Through her work, she aims to bridge the gap between clinical discovery and community health outcomes—both in the USA and globally.
