Dr. Francis Coyne is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) in Rochester, NY. He is a clinician, educator, and clinical investigator with a focus on sickle cell disease. Dr. Coyne completed his medical degree at the University at Buffalo, followed by a Medicine-Pediatrics residency at URMC. Following residency, he was selected to serve as the Medicine-Pediatrics chief resident. Dr. Coyne is the Medical Director of the Complex Care Center and Founding Director of the Adult Sickle Cell Disease Program at URMC. Early in his career, he developed URMC’s Adult Complex Care and Transition Fellowship Program. He has received grant funding from Global Blood Therapeutics and the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation to augment URMC’s sickle cell disease transition program, integrating dedicated care management, nurse coordination, and mental health support. He was also URMC’s 2021-2023 George L. Engel Dean’s Teaching Fellow, supporting his work developing a curriculum to address knowledge deficits in and attitudes about sickle cell disease for Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Medicine-Pediatrics residents at URMC. Dr. Coyne is a co-lead of the National Alliance of Sickle Cell Centers consensus group on “Defining a sickle cell disease specialist” and is a past participant of the American Society of Hematology’s Clinical Research Training Institute for a project examining the role that generalist physicians play in the care of adults with sickle cell disease. He is the current co-chair of the American Society of Hematology’s Sickle Cell Disease Health Professions Education Taskforce.
