Deanna Gaskin, BA is a member of the Early Sickle Mortality Prevention Lab under the leadership of Dr. Courtney Fitzhugh at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute at the NIH. The lab specializes in exploring new avenues of hematopoietic cell transplantation and the long-term health effects of curative therapies for sickle cell disease (SCD). After graduating with a BA in Biology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in 2021, Deanna was accepted as a fellow into 2 NIH programs, the RAHM Mishoe Fellowship for Underrepresented Scientists and the NIH Academy of Enrichment Program. She joined the Fitzhugh lab with a passion for learning about chronic diseases that affect marginalized communities and how curative therapies can improve their health and quality of life. This presentation culminates her work in understanding how curative therapies will impact the comorbidities of patients with SCD in the long term.
