Dr. Telen is the Wellcome Professor of Medicine and a practicing adult hematologist at Duke University, where she has been for more than 40 years. Her main interests have been (1) the role of red cell membrane proteins in normal physiology and in the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease and other red cell disorders, and (2) the role of genetic variation in non-hemoglobin genes as outcome modifiers in SCD. Dr. Telen has also been an active clinlical investigator and leader in both early and late clinical studies in sickle cell disease. She has also conducted research and lectured in many countries around the world, including France, Russia, Moldova, China, and India.
